Elevate your coffee ritual with jura’s revolutionary j8 machine

Jura J8 Twin review: performance

The Jura J8 Twin is exceptionally fast to warm up: from a cold morning start it’s good to go after just 45 seconds; a single espresso is ready after 30 seconds. Even more complex coffees are delivered quickly, and the informative screens show you exactly where in the process you are and, in the case of milky coffees, how many more seconds it’ll be before your coffee is ready. It’ll also recommend the grinder settings for each kind of coffee and warn you if the hoppers are getting low or if the water tank needs topped up.

Of course, it doesn’t matter how clever a coffee maker is or how fast it is to start up if the coffee isn’t good. But the coffee that the Jura J8 Twin makes is exceptional. We tried a variety of different beans and found that the results were consistently excellent both in terms of taste and temperature: espresso had the perfect rich crema, lattes were suitably luxe and the sweet foam options resulted in a lot of smiling faces. This is as good as coffee gets.

The presence of two distinct grinders opens up lots of useful options, from full-strength coffee in the morning and decaf in the afternoon to having a choice of, or a mix of, two different roasts to explore more coffee options. It’s overkill for the average coffee drinker, we’re sure. But if you’re the kind of person who likes to experiment on a Sunday morning or delight your dinner guests it’s a lot of fun.

Making sweet foam is easy: just put some syrup in the supplied attachment and clip it to the base of the milk frother.

Jura J8 Twin review: alternatives to consider

At £895, the Jura E6 is a considerably more affordable option from the same company. The Jura E6 is particularly good for black coffees, espresso and cappuccino. The display here is smaller at 2.8 inches but it’s just as easy to use, and while there’s no sweet foam option or second grinder neither of those are likely to be deal-breakers.

For a different brand, the Sage Barista Touch Impress  at £1,199 is still in premium territory but this is the company’s most advanced premium coffee maker to date, delivering great coffee with a footprint that’s smaller than its even more premium machines. It’s an excellent all-rounder.

If you’re looking for a fully automated coffee maker that won’t break the bank, we were very impressed by the Dinamica Plus ECAM370 and its £799 price tag. It’s a fully automatic bean-to-cup coffee machine that produces barista-style coffees at the touch of a button or via the app, and while it takes a bit of experimenting to get the perfect drinks it’s worth the effort.

How To Choose The Best Jura Espresso Machine

How do you decide which Jura automatic coffee machine is right for you? Although they share a common aesthetic, there are crucial differences between them that should make it easy to narrow down your top pick.

Here are a few key things to consider before you buy a Jura coffee machine.

What’s Your Favorite Coffee Drink?

Different Jura coffee makers offer different types of coffee drinks, so if you have a favorite at the local coffee shop, choose wisely.

The more expensive machines offer all the classics – coffee, espresso, latte, and cappuccino. Other coffee shop standards vary by model, so consult the specifications carefully before you buy if you usually crave a ristretto, Americano, cortado, or flat white.

  • Only the J8 has the sweetened milk foam technology.
  • Only the Z10 and Giga 10 make cold brew.
  • The budget-priced E6 doesn’t offer lattes, flat whites, or cortados, so it’s a better choice for cappuccino aficionados.
  • The ENA 4 doesn’t have a milk frothing system, making it perfect for straight espresso and black coffee lovers.

How Many People Do You Need To Serve?

Every Jura machine except the ENA 4 has two coffee spouts and can make two black coffee drinks at a time, as long as both people want the same thing. This can be a time-saver for a couple with shared preferences, but the benefit isn’t that substantial. Brewing a drink only takes about 30 seconds, and there is just one milk spout, so you’d need to wait for consecutive lattes anyway.

If you have a large household, like to host friends, or are buying for the office, you should also factor in the size of the water tank. A small tank like the ENA 8’s will need to be refilled often if you’re making a lot of drinks, which can get annoying fast, especially if your machine isn’t sink-adjacent.

What’s Your Budget?

Jura espresso machines can be divided into three price brackets, so if you have a set budget, you can immediately narrow down your choices.

The most affordable models are under $2000 (the ENA 4, E6, and ENA 8), the typical models are between $2000 and $3000 (the E8, S8, and J8), and the fanciest models (Z10 and Giga) are over $3000.

If you can’t find a machine that’ll meet your needs and fit your budget, look for a refurbished Jura. Many are offered at a deep discount, and because they are so well made, they’ll still deliver years of loyal service – often outlasting brand-new machines from lesser brands.

Overview

Sweet Foam function – a new world of indulgence

Top chefs know that the secret of creating something truly special is to use pure, fresh ingredients that are expertly prepared. The same goes for exceptional speciality coffees. The new Sweet Foam function flavours the milk foam during preparation using the syrup attachment, taking indulgence to a whole new level. By choosing the type and amount of syrup, you can customise the flavour and intensity to your personal preferences. In this way, the J8 can even create popular trend specialities such as the Sweet Latte at the touch of a button.

Coffee Eye – the smart cup sensor

Whether you want a classic from the central coffee spout or a speciality finished with milk and milk foam from the cappuccino spout, the Coffee Eye makes it even easier to prepare the perfect coffee. This smart cup sensor detects the position of the cup and automatically adapts the selection of specialities on the display accordingly. For even simpler and more intuitive operation.

P.A.G.2+ – cutting-edge technology for the ultimate coffee

The P.A.G.2+ grinder is in a class of its own. It features sound design inspired by Formula 1 technology. The aroma control function actively monitors the grind consistency to ensure perfect results every time. Depending on the selected product, the machine will recommend setting the consistency to ‘mild’ or ‘intense’. This controls the aroma in the cup. The grinding level can be adjusted at any time, but before and after preparation the P.A.G.2+ always goes into rest mode to maintain its performance throughout its lifetime. This means that your coffee machine will continue to provide the perfect flavour for even longer.

Stunning design – inside and out

The look of the J8 embodies clarity and symmetry. The quality of the machine and the expertise that went into its design are reflected in superior manufacturing standards and precision craftsmanship. The reinterpretation of the international award-winning design reveals a passionate attention to detail. From the presentation of the fresh beans to the welcoming user interface and the illumination of the aromatic finished product, everything combines to form a harmonious whole and conveys the superiority of this premium coffee machine.

Verdict: Jura J8 Review

For syrup fans

Sweet milk foam at the touch of a button? Yes you can

Very aromatic espresso & coffee

First-class milk foam (even for Flat White)

Smart user guidance features

Pleasantly quiet preparation

Syrup function pushes price up unnecessarily

Somewhat confusing scaling for grind levels

Before I knew how much this machine would cost in North America, it was difficult to establish whether or not it would represent good value for money. I have to say I’m quite relieved to see it priced quite competitively.

At the end of the day, this is a fantastic Jura machine with a quiet and efficient grinder, an intuitive user interface and a high-end milk system. Everything else is pretty unnecessary. Is the Sweet Foam function nice to have? Sure, why not. Does the Coffee Eye make my life better? Maybe just a wee bit.

I’m fairly sure my Jura J8 review will have persuaded some of you to buy this machine. As for the rest of you, you’ll just have to keep adding syrup to your glass before preparing a drink. I know it’s hard, but you can do it!

That’s it for my Jura J8 review. Have any of you bought this machine? was the Jura J8 worth waiting for? I look forward to hearing what you think in the comments section!

Jura J8 Twin review: verdict

If you like a bit of sweetness to your drinks, the Jura J8 Twin produces superbly tasty sweet foam that expands its already impressive coffee selection. There are 31 different coffees here, and that’s before you start customising the temperatures and grind strength. You can also mix beans from both grinders to create your own blends.

This is the Mercedes S-Class of fully automatic coffee machines, packed with technology, built to very high standards and with a price tag to match. That means it’s as much a statement piece as it is an everyday coffee maker.

The big selling point here is the Jura’s wide range of options. While that doesn’t make the J8 Twin any more complicated to use than other coffee makers – it’s very easy to use no matter what you’re making – all those options are overkill if you just want morning rocket fuel.

Despite the clever design the presence of not one but two dedicated grinders means this machine is a little bigger than other Juras and many rivals. It’s a very good coffee machine. But there are lots of very good coffee machines that’ll cost you considerably less cash.

What Is So Special About Jura Coffee Machines?

Three things set Jura apart from the crowd of super automatic espresso machines, justifying their higher-than-average prices.

First, there’s the exceptional build quality. Each is designed, engineered, and built in Switzerland, and you won’t find any flimsy plastic pieces or leaky seals. In fact, Jura’s are so well made that there’s a substantial market for refurbished machines.

Second, Jura coffee machines allow relatively large coffee doses, up to 16 grams. A lot of super-automatic machines max out around 10 grams, which can make for weak-tasting drinks. Nespresso pods only contain about 5 to 7 grams of coffee!

Finally, Jura holds patents on several advanced technologies found only in its machines. These impact everything from the quality of espresso and milk foam to the coffee bean grinder and the display. Here are a few of the most important innovations:

Unique Jura Technology

  • Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.): Once reserved for only high-end machines, P.E.P. is now standard in every Jura model. It ensures an optimal extraction time for the best-flavor espresso and ristretto shots.
  • 3D Brewing: Available on the E, J, and Z lines, 3D brewing technology uses a custom-designed brewing unit to let water flow evenly through the puck of ground coffee at multiple levels.
  • Fine Foam: The Fine Foam technology is an advanced integrated milk frother. It draws milk into a chamber and heats and aerates it simultaneously. Compared to other machines I’ve tested, Jura lattes have smoother and longer-lasting milk foam.
  • Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System (I.P.B.A.S.): I initially thought this was just a fancy term for a pre-infusion stage, but of course, Jura goes above and beyond; the word “intelligent” is there for a reason. The I.P.B.A.S. automatically adapts the pre-infusion based on the amount of ground coffee you’ve selected for your drink, ensuring the best possible extraction ().

Jura J8 Twin review: design

The Jura J8 Twin was the recipient of an IF Design Award in 2024, awarded by the international design organisation iF International Forum Design GmbH. It’s a good-looking thing that looks smaller than it actually is. Its very reflective high gloss finish makes it a bit of a fingerprint magnet, however, so this isn’t a device you’ll want to place near anything that sprays or splatters.

Everything you touch feels reassuringly solid and precise. The water tank has a satisfyingly solid hinge that reveals a hidden handle for easy lifting, and the power button feels like the starter button on a performance car. On top there are the twin bean hoppers, together with their accompanying grinding setting dials; they’re deceptively small-looking despite their twin 180g capacities. On the front there’s the triple-panel, full colour 6.7-inch touchscreen, the coffee spouts and the milk frother spout above a spacious chromed drip tray. Both the coffee spout and milk spout are adjustable between 65 and 111mm, and they move together.

For milky coffees there’s no built-in or plug-in milk reservoir. Instead you run the supplied thin pipe into a separate milk container or jug. The milk outlet is also a coffee outlet, so you can make your frothed and sweet drinks from a single spout.

The sweet foam attachment is also separate. That adds an inevitable fiddliness to the process: in order to use syrup you need to remove a small cylinder from the lower part of the milk frother and clip the filled syrup container in its place, putting the bit you’ve removed somewhere safe so you won’t lose it. The results are worth the slight extra effort.

Coffee Eye detects where your cup is and tells you to reposition it if it’s in the wrong place.

Like other Jura coffee makers the J8 Twin is easy to assemble and very easy to clean. In addition to its own self-cleaning system for the milk frother its ground coffee bin, surrounding parts and drip tray are simple to remove and don’t have any awkward places for gunk to build up. The discs of used-up ground coffee are less densely packed than with some other machines, which means they’re less likely to cling tenaciously to their container when you’re emptying it.

To clean the brewing unit and internal pipes Jura recommends using its cleaning tablets when prompted by the unit. The tablets are £11.95 for six.

The J8 Twin is designed to work with Jura’s Claris Smart+ water filters, which are optional but highly recommended: the machine automatically detects and rinses them and then enables you to set the water hardness level for best results. This means that descaling, a regular and frequent chore for many coffee makers, is required much less frequently. The water filters are currently £44.95 for a three-pack and each filter should last two months unless you’re making daily coffees for an army.

How to Use the Jura J8

As I mentioned earlier in my Jura J8 review, operating the machine won’t require you to spend hours with the user manual. Seriously, Jura has perfected its user interface to the point where getting started is about as easy as it gets.

First things first. You’ll need to add coffee beans to the hopper and then plug in the machine. From there, the J8 will guide you through the steps for installing the water filter and setting your water hardness.

Once you’ve filled the reservoir with cold water, you’re ready to go! Depending on where you place your cup, the Coffee Eye will do its thing and the menu will display available drinks.

After that, you can press a drink icon for a couple of seconds to access Product Settings, where you can adjust parameters like strength, volume and temperature. Once you’re satisfied, you’re able to save the settings for next time.

Best Coffee for the Jura J8

We have developed a coffee blend for all super automatic espresso machines, including the Jura J8. We tested espresso, black coffee and latte macchiato, all of which displayed deep and intense chocolatey notes.

It all depends on the beans: if you put something good in at the top, something good will come out at the bottom!

Here are the ideal settings for our coffee with the Jura J8:

  • Grind setting: Rather fine

  • Attention: Only adjust when the grinder is running!

  • Espresso volume: 1.4 ounces (40 milliliters)

  • Coffee volume: 4 ounces (120 milliliters)

  • Temperature: Maximum for espresso, lower for coffee

  • Coffee strength: Adjust to taste

Jura J8 Milk Foam

The Jura J8 offers a wide selection of milk-based specialties, including cappuccino, latte macchiato and cortado coffee. Of course, there are also syrupy versions that can be made using the Sweet Foam attachment.

In my experience, Jura coffee makers produce sublime milk foam, and the J8 is no exception. However, the manufacturer still hasn’t started including a complimentary milk flask with its machines. I mean, for the price you’re paying, I feel like that’s the least Jura could do!

Anyway, the Jura J8’s fine foam frother is easy to set up. You just connect one end of the milk hose to the spout and put the other end in a container with milk. What’s great is that the milk dispensing spout also has a coffee outlet, so you can make one-touch specialty drinks without having to move your glass.

One thing to bear in mind is that Jura insists on using a time-based system for measuring milk volume. So, it might take a little trial and error before you find the ideal settings for your dream latte. Still, I felt like the milk froth from the Jura J8 was delivered at the ideal temperature, so we’ll call that a win!

Jura J8 Twin review: value

There’s no doubt that this is one of the more expensive coffee makers you can buy: our current best buy coffee maker is almost 50% cheaper than the Jura. But throughout my time with the Jura J8 Twin I was reminded of German luxury cars: while it’s made from the same basic materials as lesser coffee makers there’s a solidity and tactility to it, a level of precision and thoughtfulness that you don’t get lower down the price scale. It’s going to be beyond the budget of many would-be buyers but for those who can afford it, it’s a sensational coffee maker of almost infinite talents.

The combination of self-cleaning and optional but recommended water filtration keeps the Jura J8 hygienic and your coffees tasty.

Jura E8 vs J6: Differences

The Jura E8 wins (2 – 1) against Jura J6 because it does have everything that’ll improve the way you drink espresso at home. You have more coffee drinks to choose from and intricate programmability.

1. Espresso Taste

The Winner: Jura J6

Jura J6 Espresso Taste

Coffee Grinder

The Jura J6 has a steel conical burr grinder – so does the Jura E8. But the J6 is equipped with an upgrade coffee grinder construction, thanks to its Aroma G3 model. The E8 is only Aroma which means it is one level lower than J6.

This, in terms of both design and performance, makes a significant difference. By design, it means the Aroma G3 heats up less, even after intense cup-after-cup use. It also means that the blades are widely spaced to cover more ground inside the grinder. This results in less ground wastage and more even and fine extraction.

The Aroma grinder, on the other hand, is fast and consistent, no doubt about it. But it does heat up slightly when you brew back to back.

The stainless steel blades have more give and durability as far as the J6 is concerned.

2. Dose Control

The Winner: Jura E8

Jura E8 Dose Control

The Jura E8 has more programmability than the J6. The number of coffee strength settings on the Jura E8 is up to 10 levels. On the J6, it is not clearly specified how many levels of adjustments you have to play around with.

The same logic applies to the adjustable temperature settings and the grind settings. The Jura E8 allows 16 different coffee drinks with programmable coffee strength, volume, temperature and hot water temperature. Plus it has a manual transition feature that lets you expertly control the milk texture of the coffee as well.

The Jura J6 allows only 7 coffee drinks.

3. Milk System

The Winner: Jura E8

Jura E8 Milk System

The battle is between the Fine Foam G2 frother and the basic Fine Foam frother. The Fine Foam G2 comes with more secure fittings with an adjustable knob that allows manual transition.

You can decide which milk texture you want. For latte macchiato, cappuccino, plain milk foam, or just hot milk. The frother can produce piping hot and smooth milk for coffee, hot chocolate, and milk froth to put on top of the espresso.

While the Fine Foam frother of the J6 delivers good hot milk and milk foam, it does require faster replacement (less than 2 months) if you use the frother every day.

Jura E8 vs. J6: Main Similarities

1. Design and Convenience

At first glance, these units have similar designs with the same features, such as dual spouts, a screen display, and a milk frother.

Sadly they don’t have a touch screen, which I always expect from a Jura coffee machine. So instead of touching the screen, you need to use buttons to adjust the settings.

2. Size

Regarding the exact dimensions, the Jura E8 has a dimension of 13.8 x 17.3 x 11 inches with a weight of 26.49 pounds, whereas its J6 counterpart measures 13.5 x 17 x 11.2 inches and weighs about 24 pounds. Both have a small footprint, allowing them to take up little space on your kitchen countertop.

When it comes to colors, the E8 comes in black and stainless steel, while the J6 only delivers the silver option. Just choose according to your preference.

3. Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning the coffee machine after each use is essential to prolong its life and ensure you get a delicious coffee taste. Fortunately, both machines feature easy and quick cleaning cycles. They can be set to low-energy mode, auto turn-off, and rinsing with just the press of a button.

The Jura J6 comes with the CLEARYL water filter, while the E8 has a Claris water filter. Thanks to that, they do a great job of maintaining a clog-free environment for espresso extraction or milk frothing.

Jura J8 Cleaning

While cleaning and descaling a super automatic machine involves more work than for a drip coffee maker, Jura always makes it pretty easy on you. I have to say that the J8’s automatic cleaning functions do a great job of keeping things spick and span. Still, you will have to take care of a few things to keep your Jura J8 in tip-top condition.

For starters, empty and rinse the drip tray and used grounds collection container at the end of each day’s use. While you’re at it, disassemble the milk frother and rinse all the parts under warm water.

As for deep cleaning, the Jura J8 will let you know when to perform the necessary tasks via messages on the display. Seeing as the brew group can’t be removed, you’ll need to use Jura cleaning tablets to flush the coffee circuit.

The manufacturer claims that you won’t need to descale the machine if you have a water filter installed. Still, I’d take that with a grain of salt and use Jura descaling tablets once every three months or so. After all, you’re better safe than sorry!

Jura J8 Twin review: features

Key specifications

Accessories: Includes milk pipe, Wi-Fi connectivity and sweet foam attachment; options include glass milk container, cup warmer, stainless steel milk pipe

Size: 31 × 36 × 44.6 cm

Capacity: 1.9L water tank, 2 x 180g bean hoppers

Memory: 31 coffees with 8 levels of programmable strength, 3 levels of brewing temperature and programmable milk/foam levels

Grinder: 2 x PAG3+ conical grinders

Power: 1,450W

Technologies: Thermoblock heating system, Pulse Extraction Process, 5-16g Variable Brewing Unit

What the J8 Twin offers most of all is flexibility: it offers 31 different kinds of coffee to begin with, and you can then customise and save everything from the temperature to the blends from those two grinders. Each grinder has its own adjustable grinding settings and you can use them independently or mix them together in whatever proportion you prefer.

In addition to twin grinders, the USP here is the sweet foam attachment. This enables you to add flavoured syrup such as vanilla, caramel or peppermint to the milk frother, which the J8 Twin then blends with the frothed milk to produce a shot of sweet foam for an even more luxurious drink.

Everything is controlled via the wide, full colour touchscreen display, which is completely beginner-friendly but which also has plenty of customization for power users. Moving between the different menu screens is fast and responsive, and you can store specific coffees as favorites for even quicker access. There’s also a smartphone app (and Apple Watch app) that you can use to adjust settings and monitor the status of your drinks, although it does seem rather unnecessary when the touchscreen control is so good.

There are luxury touches throughout such as automatic aroma monitoring to optimise each brew, progress reports on the display, subtle but attractive and useful cup illumination and the clever Coffee Eye, which can detect where your cup is to ensure it’s in the right place for the coffee you’re making and prevent misplaced mug messes.

The J8 Twin has two independent conical grinders, each with its own grind adjustment dial. You can use them separately or combine them for a blend.
