How to Use the Jura E8

Although the Jura E8 is a powerful and versatile coffee maker, don’t think for a second it’ll be hard to use. Sure, you might need to consult the user manual here and there, but getting started is easy peasy. First things first you’ll need to add coffee beans to the hopper.

After installing the water filter, filling the reservoir and inputting your water hardness, you’re good to go. Well, actually the machine will perform a few rinsing functions, but it won’t take long and the E8 will keep you updated.

Honestly, I’d recommend diving right in and starting to make drinks. Seeing as the user interface is so intuitive, adjusting individual settings to your liking is a piece of cake. 

If you plan on making milk-based specialties, it’s just a case of dropping the cappuccinatore pipe into whichever container you’re using for milk. Best of all, you don’t even have to move your glass between coffee and milk spouts!

Espresso Preparation

With 10 preset levels for coffee strength, the Jura E8 fully automatic espresso machine offers finer gradations in this department than the five available on most other super automatic machines. You can even adjust the water quantity on a sliding scale from 0.5-2.7 ounces (15-80 milliliters).

This puts a smile on my face, especially as most super automatics have just under an ounce as their lower limit. That’s the norm for an espresso, not the minimum. Depending on your choice of coffee beans, and how they respond to different settings, you can boost the quality by reducing the water volume to 0.7 ounces.

For those with mouths of steel, who find that coffee drinks from most super automatic espresso machines only ever seem lukewarm, the second temperature option will be very welcome. My happy place in terms of beverage temperature is the default setting of “normal.”

Those who like it hotter can bump the temperature up to “high.” There’s nowhere really to go above that because you’d quickly hit the natural ceiling for brewing coffee. Any hotter, and you’re scalding the coffee grounds.

Jura E8 Cleaning

I used to be pretty freaked out by Jura’s insistence on including fixed brew groups in its machines. However, having performed a year-long experiment on a Jura A1, my fears have been put to rest. It turns out that the self-cleaning functions work a treat!

There are rinsing and cleaning functions for coffee and espresso as well as for the Jura E8 milk frother, which needs to be flushed after each use. To do so, you can program the machine to prompt you to initiate the purge if you’re worried about forgetting.

The manufacturer recommends cleaning the milk system properly at the end of each day of use. That not only entails following the cleaning procedure I described together with Jura Milk System Cleaner, but also unscrewing and disassembling the fine foam frother to wash it by hand.

As soon as the Jura espresso machine is switched on or off, it auto-rinses the coffee system. A deeper clean is due after 80 drinks, but the machine will prompt you. Jura recommends using its branded products in this roughly 20-minute process.

Of course, every brand punts its own products, but since you’re trusting Jura with your machine’s hygiene, I’d say there’s no point in half measures.

Descaling the Jura E8

Last but not least, there’s the obligatory descaling program. However, according to the manufacturer, you shouldn’t need to run it if you use the Claris filters. Jura is singing from my songbook on this point. I always advise using filtered water because it produces better coffee and protects the espresso machine. That goes doubly if your tap water is particularly hard. 

Don’t know your water hardness? That’s what the included test strip is for.

Once again, the machine will let you know when to run the 40-minute program if you need to descale.

Simply dissolve the appropriate descaling tablets in water, pour that water into the tank and start the program. The Jura E8 manual walks you through the process step by step.

It almost goes without saying that you also need to regularly shine up the drip tray and dregs box. When I say regularly, I definitely mean daily. Unfortunately, you can’t pop them in the dishwasher.

At the time of writing (August 2022) the JURA E8 retails for $2,399 (Piano Black) or for $2,499 (Piano White or Chrome) which is on the high end for super-automatic espresso machines.

So, is the Jura E8 worth its price tag? This depends on your current habits and how much of a coffee fiend you are.

Let’s do a bit of math to see if this is a good value purchase…

If you buy flat whites, for example, from a coffee shop every day at $5 per drink, then you are spending about $1,825 on coffee per year. Your return for that money is only the experience of drinking that coffee every day. There is also a cost component related to the time spent on that detour to get coffee, but we’ll ignore this to keep things simple.

Note that if two people in your household drink a daily coffee, the above cost balloons to $3,650 per year. Ouch!

So, if you live with a family who drinks coffee, the JURA E8 could potentially pay for itself within one year!

And at the end of the year, you’ll still have a great machine that will last you for years to come.

The JURA E-line is also known for its reliability and low maintenance, so the likelihood of needing repairs is quite low.

So the Jura E8, in general, offers good value for money if you’re looking for a luxurious super automatic.

However…

JURA should really include a milk jug upon purchase. It’s a bit silly to use such a nice machine with a milk cartoon. There is also no cup warmer, for which you will have to pay extra.

In short, the Jura E8 is a great investment for coffee aficionados. It offers many features, good build quality, ease of use, and most importantly – great-tasting coffee! If you can afford it, we say go for it!

What’s New in the Latest Jura E8 2021 Model?

Jura just released a new E8 model in 2021, and it has a few key differences from the old E8 model. 

The new E8 model has a full-front chrome panel, while the original model had a black insert in the middle. The new model also has redesigned spouts and fine foam frother. The screen and buttons changed on the new E8. The buttons are almost embedded into the screen.

Beyond cosmetic changes, Jura has added some new functionalities to the new E8. The new E8 has a quieter and faster grinder. You can also choose to add a second shot of espresso to the cappuccino, latte macchiato, and flat white.  

Jura has also added a cafe barista function. Jura added a new hot water spout right behind the coffee spout so you can add hot water to your espresso shots. This allows you to make a more authentic Americano similar to what you would get from a barista.  

The new E8 also has a new automatic milk cleaning feature that automatically cleans the parts of the machine used to make milk beverages. This keeps the E8 clean and hygienic.
