One-minute review
De’Longhi is a well-known name when it comes to coffee makers, particularly espresso machines and automatic coffee machines, however while it may have been running for more than a century, its first coffee makers weren’t released until 1990.
It offers a wide array of models from manual espresso machines, single-serve coffee makers that use pods, and even fully automatic coffee makers. The De’Longhi Dinamica Plus is one of its top-of-the-range bean-to-cup coffee machines, which can create your favorite barista-style coffees at the touch of a button.
It covers every step of the process from grinding the beans through to brewing the coffee, frothing milk and even cleaning itself at the end. All you have to do is top up coffee beans, milk and water.
JUMP TO
The De’Longhi Dinamica Plus offers a range of adjustable settings including drink size, aroma, and amount of froth. On top of that, these can be saved in user profiles, making it simple to create the perfect drink to suit you every time. However, this high-spec coffee maker comes with a hefty price tag to match.
It’s ideally suited to time-poor coffee connoisseurs who want to create their favorite coffee at home but don’t have the time nor the inclination to grind the beans, manually make espresso, or froth the milk. We found it easy to use and enjoyed the ability to customize drinks, but we had to experiment a bit to get coffees that tasted exactly like the ones from our local coffee shop.
Milk frothing
One of the selling points of the Dinamica Plus is its automatic milk steaming functionality. It allows you to make warm or frothed milk, or mixed drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes, at the touch of a button – more or less. The set-up comprises a thick plastic milk tank that attaches to the front of the machine, with an inbuilt steam wand.
It delivers heated milk that’s frothed to the requirement of your chosen beverage: no froth, minimum or maximum. It works well and, like every other aspect of the machine, produces reliable results.
But, as far as I’m concerned, if you’ve mastered a steam wand, the automatic system isn’t really much quicker. So, for many households, the
Dinamica will be just as good an option.
Our Verdict
The Dinamica Plus compares favorably against any other mid-range super-automatic espresso machine, offering great functionality, ease of use, and a range of beautiful coffees at the touch of a button.
The machine is also compact enough that it won’t take up too much space on your countertop, while it’s sturdy enough to offer a premium aesthetic, even though much of the exterior uses plastic.
One of the nicest additions to the Dinamica Plus over other models in the range is the intuitive touchscreen, which adds significantly to the overall user experience.
Meanwhile, the Wi-Fi connectivity and ability to program the machine via the dedicated app on your smartphone or tablet is a masterstroke, leading to a truly hassle-free experience that you’d struggle to replicate with another machine in a similar price range.
Yes, the Dinamica Plus costs more than other machines in the Dinamica line-up, but if you’re happy to pay the extra, you’ll get a machine that’s a pleasure to use and brews consistently beautiful coffee.

Gaggia Cadorna Prestige Super-Automatic Espresso Machine
The Gaggia Cadorna Prestige is a one-touch automatic espresso machine with 14 pre-programmed drinks. There is also a full-color TFT display and an integrated milk carafe. Frankly, this is a great machine that brews beautiful coffee. You can find out more in our Gaggia Cadorna Prestige review.
Saeco Xelsis Super Automatic Espresso Machine
Saeco Xelsis has a 3.5in touchscreen and makes up to 15 specialty coffee beverages. Many customization options include five coffee strength levels, three temperature levels, and up to 12 grind settings. Overall, it is a comparable machine to the Dinamica Plus. However, it is also more expensive.
Design and build
The Dinamica Plus is a simply designed and attractive appliance. It comes in black, silver or grey. This really just refers to the colour of the front panelling, as all machines have a central black control panel with a colour touchscreen and chrome-effect trim around the screen and dispenser.
If I were to criticise its appearance, it would be that – apart from the drip tray – the machine’s exterior is almost entirely plastic. Some steel or chrome accents would have gone a long way towards giving it a premium feel. But it’s still a good looking appliance that will fit well in a modern, minimalist kitchen.
The next thing to mention is that it’s more compact that you might expect – in fact it’s pretty narrow at just 23.6cm wide, so you can easily find a space to slot it into on your counter.
It is, however, very deep (42.9cm), so you’ll lose most of the counter space in front of it. And if you have low kitchen cabinets, you should measure up to ensure that you’ll still have space above its 34.8cm height to remove the lid and drop beans into the hopper from above.
The hopper will be likely be in the shadow of your cabinets, but that shouldn’t be a problem as De’Longhi has made it large and accessible. In fact, it takes up the entire back half of the machine. Just lift off the lid and you can drop the beans anywhere.
There’s also a smaller inset funnel into which you can pour ground coffee, if you’d prefer to use that. You can only add one scoop at a time (there’s a scoop provided with the machine). However, if you’ve decided to invest in a bean-to-cup machine, you’ll really want to use fresh beans, so that’s what we’ve focused on.
There’s also space to store a couple of espresso cups on top but you probably wouldn’t want to: it will only warm up the cups if it’s left on standby for a long time. Besides, cups will obstruct the bean hopper.
At the front of the machine is a colour screen that you’ll use for all programming and coffee making processes – except for the bean grinding, for which there’s a separate dial in the hopper. You’ll also get alerts on when to refill the water tank and empty the used grounds container.
Underneath the screen is a double dispensing spout, which is adjustable downwards, so you can fit a pair of big mugs or petite espresso cups onto the generous drip tray.
One particularly nice feature about this, and other machines in the Dinamica range, is that the water tank is accessible from the front, without having to shift the machine or fumble about behind it. Simply slide out the 1.8 litre tank to refill it.

App
- Simple to navigate
- Easy to customize your favorite beverage
- Gives machine status information
The coffee link app connects to the machine via Bluetooth. It displays each beverage option via clear images and we found it easy to navigate around the different drinks. It allows for additional personalization of drinks that can’t be done via the machine, such as setting coffee quantity in ml and milk quantity by pouring time. We found it much easier to customize drinks through the app than on the machine. You can also prepare drinks via the app, but you still need to be near the machine to make sure there’s a cup under the spout.
The app can be used to switch the machine on, which is useful in the mornings, allowing you to turn it on from your bedroom, so it’s completed the heating up process by the time you get to the kitchen. But if you want to prepare a drink with ground coffee, for decaf drinks for example, we couldn’t find an option in the app to select ground coffee when preparing drinks.

Delonghi Dinamica Plus Vs Dinamica: Differences
The Dinamica Plus wins 4-3 against the Dinamica. For the rest of the post, we are going to look closer at the differences and similarities between the two models.
Heating System
Winner: Delonghi Dinamica
It sounds ridiculous, but the Dinamica indeed has two fast-heating thermoblocks, whereas the Dinamica Plus has only one. Not only does the dual boiler heating system allow the Dinamica to brew espresso and steam milk foam simultaneously, but it also helps the machine maintain a consistent temperature.
The thermoblock boiler itself is a big plus since it can heat water quickly. It ensures the machine is ready to brew coffee or steam milk in a much shorter time compared to ones with traditional boiler systems, which is especially convenient for users who are often in a hurry or don’t want to wait long for their coffee.
Brewing System
Winner: Tie
The Delonghi Dinamica brews espresso at 15 bars of pressure, while the Dinamica Plus operates at a higher pressure of 19 bars. There is a significant difference here, but they are both sufficient to pull a rich and flavorful shot, which only requires a standard pressure of 9 bars.
By the way, both pre-soak the coffee grounds in hot water before the full extraction process begins, called pre-infusion. This short step allows the grounds to swell and release carbon dioxide, leading to a more even and thorough extraction. It can also help in reducing bitterness and acidity that might occur due to over-extraction or channeling.
Dimensions & User Interface

---|---|---|
Dimensions | 9.3 x 14 x 17 inches | 9.3 x 14 x 17 inches |
Weight | 20.9 lbs | 20.8 lbs |
Design-wise, these machines are nearly identical twins. They both sport a sleek, glossy exterior and even though they are primarily constructed of plastic, they still feel and look sturdy.
The key difference lies in their interfaces: the Dinamica features a button-operated LCD screen compared to a touch screen on the top front of the Dinamica Plus. Listen, I love the Dinamica Plus’s pretty touchscreen, but the Dinamica’s LCD screen makes it super easy to use the machine. It might look a bit old-fashioned and cheap, but all the buttons needed are right there with an easy-to-read display.

Both machines boast an impressive array of beverage options, but they differ in some options. And in terms of programming, they are exactly the same, with four coffee temperatures and five strength settings, so you can create a drink that aligns precisely with your personal taste.
User Profile
The Dinamica Plus features three user profiles, which can be renamed, and one guest profile, while the Dinamica doesn’t have any profiles. A total of four profiles is not much, but half a loaf is better than none, don’t you think? This is especially useful if you and a few other people like the same drink but each prefer it brewed just a bit differently.
The Dinamica Plus has 4 user profiles
The Dinamica doesn’t have any profiles, but a memo function makes up for this somewhat. It allows you to save your personalized drinks, so you can recreate your favorite personalized beverages easily and quickly at the touch of a button.
App Connectivity
The Dinamica Plus can pair with your smartphone or tablet app via the Coffee Link app, while the Dinamica lacks this ability. The app’s main benefit is that it allows you to personalize your drink settings or start a brewing cycle remotely, whether you’re still cozy in bed or busy at your desk. The app also offers valuable tips and tricks for creating amazing coffee drinks and provides detailed guidance for maintaining your machine – all in the palm of your hand.
Performance
- Easy to operate
- The perfect coffee requires some trial and error
- Milk frother creates a thick stable foam
Firstly, with regard to flavor, it must be said that the flavor of your finished coffee depends on the coffee bean you use, grind size, strength selected, temperature, and the coffee to milk ratios, so can vary widely, and with this in mind, it’s great that there are so many customizable settings. We found it easy to change settings, particularly on the app, but it took us a while and several attempts to get a coffee that was brewed exactly as we like it when ordering from the coffee shop. That said, once you get it right and save the settings, you can pour the perfect coffee every time, at the touch of a button.
An espresso took just 30 seconds to pour from first pressing the button and came out at 153 F/ 67 C, which is slightly below the optimum of 195 F / 90 C and 205 F / 96C. The default amount is 40ml but this can easily be adjusted in the app in 5 ml increments. It had a well-rounded flavor that wasn’t burnt or overly bitter, we had to play around with the grind size dial to get the crema right. But with the right adjustments, we produced a crema that was thick and reformed after a spoon of sugar was poured in.
To brew a cappuccino, it took one minute twenty-five seconds from pressing the button to the end of pouring. The silky thick milk foam stays stable until the end of the drink and at 80dB this was the loudest the coffee machine reached during our testing time. This is the equivalent of a truck traveling down the road at 40mph, but as the noise only lasts for a couple of minutes, we think this is acceptable.
The automatic milk frother can produce a mug of hot frothy milk in just under a minute with a temperature of around 133 F/ 56 C, the bubbles are thick and velvety and remain stable for the whole drink. And it works just as effectively with plant-based milk, we tried oat milk with great frothy results.
We like having the ability to add ground coffee but when preparing decaf coffee, on a couple of occasions we found that it didn’t recognize that we had already poured the ground coffee into the chute and prompted us to add it again.
Daily cleaning is easy, it prompts you to turn the milk frother dial to clean after use, it also empties coffee grounds into the bin and rinses the coffee spout automatically. There is additional cleaning required of the water tank and milk frother periodically and when prompted the machine will need descaling using a De’Longhi descaler, but this level of maintenance is standard for a coffee machine.
Don’t buy it if…
You’re on a budgetThis is a very expensive coffee machine that isn’t affordable for most people. Depending on where you live, we calculated that the cost is the equivalent of around 300 large coffees from a coffee chain and that’s before you factor in the cost of coffee beans and milk.
You want the barista experienceThis machine is fully automated, so if you want to manually pour your espresso and froth your own milk this isn’t the machine for you.
You’re short on spaceIt’s quite a bulky machine that will take up a good chunk of space on your countertop.

Dinamica Automatic Coffee & Espresso Machine Cleaning Process
You won’t have any cleaning woes with the Dinamica series– once you learn how to do it, that is.
Some reviews have said it’s complicated following the instructions. Even though all three machines will send a notification when something needs to be refilled or descaled, you will have to read the manual carefully.
With that being said, the maintenance process was designed to be as simple as possible and accomplished without the need for chemicals.
All models have a removable brew unit, water tank, drip tray, and grounds drawer. You can rinse these items under the tap, then snap them back into place.
The frother needs to be cleaned once a week by purging the steam system with hot water to prevent dried milk from forming.
There is a RINSE function that you can push, and the machine will automatically flush out the entire system. It will also initiate the rinse cycle every time you turn off the device.

- Low to high price range depending on the model.
- Fast and easy cleaning process.

CONS

All three models are designed to be compact, so they’re ideal for a small apartment or if you have limited counter space. Depending on the model, you have black/white plastic, stainless steel, or titanium parts.

You can use the digital display to control every aspect of the machine, from adjusting the coffee strength, temperature, and volume to saving your drink profiles. If there is ever an error or your machine needs maintenance, it will let you know with a notification.
As you know, there are three models we focused on, and each offers its own unique set of characteristics to suit the needs of all users.
