Folgers coffee ad from the 1960s
Folgers is promoted with the slogan “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!” It is well associated with a jingle featured in almost every advertisement since 1984, with lyrics by Susan Spiegel Solovay and Bill Vernick, and music by Leslie Pearl. Over the years it has been rearranged and performed by many famous musicians, such as Randy Travis, Aretha Franklin, and Rockapella.
Folgers was known for many years for television ads involving “Mrs. Olson,” a Swedish neighbor who invariably recommended a cup of Folgers coffee for the characters in the commercial, who were almost always housewives with various problems making delicious-tasting coffee. From 1965 to 1986, actress Virginia Christine reminded viewers Folgers was “mountain grown, the richest kind of coffee.”
Folgers promoted their instant coffee in 1970s and early 1980s ads which took the viewer inside various gourmet restaurants while a voice-over (played by Bryan Clark) whispered, “We are here at (insert name of four-star restaurant), where we’ve secretly replaced the fine coffee they usually serve with Folgers Crystals. Let’s see if anyone can tell the difference!” Clark ended the commercials with the line, “Folgers Crystals…coffee rich enough to be served in America’s finest restaurants.”
One Folgers television ad from 1985 became particularly associated with the Christmas holidays. A student named Peter returns home from college, the smell of freshly brewed coffee awakening his parents and alerting them to their son’s arrival. The Cunningham & Walsh spot aired yearly until 1998, then in edited form in 2004 and 2005. In 2009, a similar theme was employed, a son coming home from West Africa and waking up to the smell of coffee.
In the mid-1980s Folgers became one of the first NASCAR sponsors that was not affiliated with an automotive, tobacco, or beer company. After a trial season with the Joe Ruttman driven, Larry McClure owned Chevrolet in 1985, Folgers expanded sponsorships with high profile race teams and popular drivers such as Tim Richmond, Benny Parsons, Ken Schrader, and Mark Martin.
In 2006, the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi created a viral advertisement, popularly known as “Happy Mornings,” for Folgers. The ad, in which a large group of cheerful singers and dancers appear at sunrise as the sun itself to wake people up, has been widely distributed on weblogs and video sites such as YouTube.
In 2010, Folgers ran a Folgers Jingle Contest in which fans could submit their own renditions of the “The Best Part of Wakin’ Up” jingle through video submissions. The contest ran in 2011 and in 2013, and in 2014, the brand celebrated the 30th anniversary of the famous jingle.
Challenges in Achieving Perfect Distribution
Achieving perfect distribution of coffee grounds poses several challenges in the pursuit of consistent extraction. These challenges include clumping of coffee grounds, channeling caused by poor distribution or tamping, inconsistent grind from different grinders, and the tricky technique for beginners.
Overcoming these distribution challenges is essential for a delightful coffee experience. Techniques for improving distribution consistency include the Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT), which was introduced by John Weiss. WDT improves the uniformity of coffee grounds distribution, minimizes channeling during espresso extraction, and promotes even water flow by using a thin tool to stir and redistribute grounds.
Other distribution methods such as Stockfleth’s method, tapping method, leveling tools, and shaking method are also compared, but the WDT stands out for its attention to detail and effectiveness in breaking up clumps.

A Background on Folgers Coffee
Folgers is a product of The J.M. Smucker Company. The Folgers coffee company was founded in 1850 by William H. Bovee in San Francisco. James Athearn (J.A.) Folger was hired as a carpenter to help Bovee with the mill construction and later became a partner.
Following this, James Athearn (J.A.) Folger became a full partner, then later bought all the partners out and changed the company name to J.A. Folger & Co. After his death, the company’s ownership was transferred to his son, James A. Folger II.
Folgers is also a household coffee brand that grew to be one of the largest coffee brands in America after World War II when it created campaigns that were geared toward American housewives.
It was one of the top coffee brands in the US due to its takeover by Proctor and Gamble from 1963 to 2008. It was then separated into the current ownership of The J.M. Smucker Company.
Over time, the company’s coffee has become more and more watered down, even though they are still seen as a high-quality brand. They recently had to cut ties with their iconic spokesperson, William Shatner, because he couldn’t help them bring back customers.
Starbucks vs Folgers (Who Has the Better Prices?)
I think we all know how this first battle of Starbucks vs Folgers will go. Starbucks is notorious for its expensive coffee. Some experts have even said that if a particular generation would stop buying Starbucks, they could own a home.
Kroger is my local largest grocery store, so I went to the one down the street. I compared similar sizes of Starbucks (whole bean) Pike Place medium roast coffee and Folgers Classic Roast. They’re both in the same aisle in the grocery store. I’ll dive into the packaging and visual experience of the 2 a bit further into this post.
Here’s a look at how much the 2 brands cost and who is more affordable. I brewed the types of coffee according to their directions of the packaging.
Starbucks Pike Place
Cost per Bag – $8.29
Size – 12 oz. / 340 grams
Serving Size – 2 Tablespoons (9 grams)
Cups per Bag – 38 cups
Cost per Cup – $0.22
Just under $9.00 a bag isn’t incredibly expensive compared to more boutique roasted coffee. But it’s not exactly budget friendly, either, is it?
I’ve been in a position where I had $20.00 for groceries for the week. And there was no way I was spending $9.00 on a bag of coffee.
If you’re looking for a great cup of coffee that isn’t going to blow your budget, Starbucks isn’t the one. Not only is this coffee almost double the cost of its competitor, but it also doesn’t brew as many cups.
Part of the cost with Starbucks Pike Place roast (like all the brand’s coffee) is 100% arabica beans. Arabica beans are the preferred coffee variety for Americans because of marketing. Also, they’re superior beans to robusta beans.
Folgers Coffee
Cost per Can – $4.99
Size – 11.3 oz. / 320 grams
Serving Size – 1 Tablespoon (5 grams)
Cups per Bag – 64 cups
Cost per Cup – $0.07
I knew Starbucks was going to lose when comparing prices.
But I didn’t think it would be this steep a difference.
Not only does Folgers cost almost half of its Starbucks equivalent, but it also requires half the amount of coffee to brew.
Folgers wins the budget battle by leaps and bounds over Starbucks. Folgers is a lot more affordable than Starbucks, and for a good reason. The company is bigger and can afford to have a smaller margin. They also use a blend of robusta and arabica beans. Robusta beans are more affordable than arabica beans. This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s lesser coffee, either.
If you’re looking for an affordable, easy to find coffee brand, Folgers is your coffee. It’s a great option if you’re looking for an excellent coffee to make for a crowd, especially if the said crowd isn’t particular about their coffee’s origin or sourcing.
History of Folgers Coffee
In 1850, James A. Folger traveled to San Francisco, CA, from Nantucket (Massachusetts) at the tender age of 14 in search of gold after a fire devastated their family’s livelihood (3). He was accompanied by his two brothers.
Around the same time, the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills were established by William H. Bovee. James, who was a trained carpenter, decided to stay behind in San Francisco while his two brothers headed to the gold mines.
It was the time of the California Gold Rush.
James got a job on Bovee’s company where he helped build the spice and coffee mills. Before, Californians had to purchase coffee beans while still green and do the roasting and grinding themselves.
Working for about a year at Bovee’s mills, James saved enough money and he was able to stake a claim to the company then headed to the gold mine to work. James agreed to carry some samples of coffee and spices where he takes orders from stores along the way.
In 1854, James returned to San Francisco and became a full partner of The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills (3). By 1872, James was able to buy out the other partners’ share and renamed the company J.A. Folger & Co.
In 1953, Folgers Instant Coffee was released. But it was discontinued after a while because of poor response from consumers. In 1958, the new Instant Folgers was re-introduced to the market and it was a complete success!
In 1960, Folgers transferred its operation in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the company still roasts up to this day.
Three years later (1963), Folgers was acquired by Procter & Gamble and began the distribution of the product all over America. In 2008, Folgers merged with J.M. Smucker Company and continues to be America’s much-loved coffee brand.
More About Folgers Coffee Beans
J.A. Folger was one of the first people who started using taste and aroma as a differentiating factor for coffee in a highly competitive environment.
The cupping quality control was revolutionary at the time, since before, coffee used to be judged solely based on the size of the beans.
At the beginning of the 19th century, coffee was available but was considered a luxury and ground coffee was unheard of on a wholesale level.
This notion was transformed by Folger who brought affordable coffee available for purchase to the public. Their long-lasting success is reflected in the fact that Folgers remained a number one coffee company in the US until 2013 when Keurig took over.
Folgers Brands
The established brand color in the Folgers brand logo is traditionally a medium-dark red background with white lettering. White or grey fonts are still used, with a green background for decaffeinated coffee and a black background for dark Roast Noir.

Folgers Cold Brew
Many people like cold brew coffee because it’s less acidic, easier on the stomach and smoother in taste. You can use Folger’s coffee to make this refreshing beverage.
I would recommend using a medium roast when making cold brew since the longer brewing period will allow the more delicate tasting notes to develop in your final cup.
Here’s how you make cold brew with Folger’s coffee:
- Use 1 cup of ground coffee per 5 cups of cold water.
- Mix the ground coffee with cold water in a large container and leave it a room temperature for 12-24 hours.
- Strain the coffee with a cheesecloth.
- Before serving, fill the cup with ice.
- You can add sweetener, milk or cream of choice, but most people find the cold brew smooth enough to drink by itself.
Компания Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills была основана в 1850 году Уильямом Х.
Maxwell House .
The Best Part of Waking Up is Folger’s in Your Cup! .
Folgers Gourmet Supreme.
Brewing Folgers Coffee with a Drip Coffee Maker
If you prefer the convenience of a drip coffee maker, brewing Folgers coffee is a straightforward process. Start by measuring out the appropriate amount of coffee grounds for your desired strength. For a standard 6-ounce cup of coffee, you will need one tablespoon of coffee grounds. Adjust the amount based on your personal taste.
Next, fill the water reservoir of your coffee maker with cold, filtered water. Use approximately 6 fluid ounces of water for each cup of coffee you plan to brew. This will ensure that your coffee is brewed to the perfect strength and flavor. Insert a Folgers coffee filter into the filter basket, then add the measured coffee grounds.
Turn on your coffee maker and allow it to brew the coffee. Once the brewing process is complete, pour yourself a cup and enjoy the rich, delicious flavor of Folgers coffee.
